Essential Water Saving Tips
If we all make small changes, we can save water, save money, and protect our local water supplies.

Water in the morning or evening
Water in the early morning or later in the evening when the sun is going down reduces evaporation so that more water gets into the soil.

Harvest rainwater
Rainwater is full of nutrients your plants will love. Better yet, it’s free!

Consider adding clover
When it’s dry, lawns can turn brown due to the lack of rainfall. While well-established lawns recover when the rain returns, there are other ways to keep your lawn green. A good low maintenance option is clover. Not only does clover need less water than traditional grass lawns, it’s also pollinator friendly.

Use a watering can instead
Hoses and sprinklers typically use about 1000 litres of water an hour. This is more than 12 baths. Watering cans use significantly less water.

Wash your car with a sponge and bucket
Be proud of your dirty car – you’re doing your bit to save water. If you do need to wash it, try using a bucket a sponge instead of a hose, or even just give the windscreen a quick clean.

Just a small top up
If you use a pool to keep cool in the summer – adding a cover overnight will keep the water cleaner for longer. When you need to, top it up rather than emptying it out, and then re-use the water on your garden plants.
