POTENTIAL TRAFFIC DISRUPTION – Hayling Island

Water Leak- A3023 Havant Road Hayling Island. (Approximately 50 metres South of Victoria Road)

POTENTIAL TRAFFIC DISRUPTION
18th Jan 2018 – Update 14:30

This morning we had a significant burst main at the above location. Due to the level of flooding to the road which created a hazard for road users, we looked to undertake the repair today. As a result we erected temporary traffic control which has resulted in delays for road users.

After the initial investigation, the work required would have taken several hours to complete and would have required a complete road closure. If we had started the work then we would have caused severe traffic disruption from the road closure plus a risk of no water for a large number of Hayling residents.

This is because we would have to have taken one of the two large diameter mains that serve Hayling Island out of service. When demand is low i.e. during the day water being supplied via one of these mains would suffice to provide an adequate water supply for residents. However, at peak demands such as first thing in the morning or early evening then both mains need to functional to meet the demand from residents.

As a result it has been decided to commence the repair from 9.30pm this evening, which will ensure with the lower demand from residents water supplies will not be affected. Although some properties may experience slightly lower pressure than they normally would for a short period of time.

Unfortunately, this means the traffic measures that are currently in place, due to the flooding in the area, will have to remain prior to a full road closure tonight from 8.00pm, to allow us to undertake preparation work ahead of the repair.

This will cause traffic disruption in the busy period late this afternoon and early evening. This can’t be avoided as maintaining water supplies has to be our priority.

We aim to finished by 6am tomorrow morning and have the road reopened. A further statement will be issued if the work will not be completed by this time. Updates will also be issued via our twitter feed and website.

This is emergency work and I hope you all understand the reasons for our decision and as always we apologies for the inconvenience this has and will cause over the coming hours.
