Essential Water Saving Tips
If we all make small changes, we can save water, save money, and protect our local water supplies.
Did you know that saving water also reduces your energy bills?
Around 18% of energy consumption in UK homes is spent heating water, and about 12% of a typical gas heated home’s heating bill is from the water for showers, baths and the hot water tap. So even if you don’t have a water meter you could still be saving money on your energy bill.
Keep your drinking water in the fridge
Fill a jug with water and pop it in the fridge for cold refreshing drinking water all day.
Use a bowl
Washing up packaging for recycling? Using a bowl means you don’t have the tap running and saves water.
Turn the tap off
While you are washing up, or washing hands, a running tap loses up to 6 litres of water a minute.
Collect while you wait
Collect running water in a jug while you wait for it to heat up – this can be used to water your plants, or even flush the loo!
Wait for a full load
Surveys show that a typical load of washing is usually much less than the maximum capacity of the model, and the average cycle uses 60 litres of water. If you can wait until you have a full load, you can lower the number of loads and save water and energy.
Switch up your showerhead
The average showerhead uses about 10 litres of water per minute, with most power showers using around 15 litres. With the average shower length coming in at around 10 minutes, with an aerated or low-flow showerhead you could save up to 150 litres of water every time you shower!
Strip test your toilet
A leaking toilet can waste up to 400 litres of water a day, but most customers are unaware of the leak. There are simple ways to check if your loo is leaky, you can use dye in your cistern or order free LeakyLoo strips.
Simply stop a dripping tap
A dripping tap can waste up to 5,500 litres of water a year and is usually a simple fix. If you have a dripping tap it can be possible to fix this yourself, but there are other times you may want a professional to take a look.
Wrap up for winter
As the temperatures start to drop over winter, outside taps can freeze and may cause a leak. Protect your outside tap and pipes with a free tap jacket and lagging.
Save your cistern 1 litre per flush
Single flush toilets use around 13 litres every flush versus dual flush toilets, which use 4-6 litres. Adding a cistern displacement bag in your tank can save around 5,000 litres of water a year.
